Effect Of Various Surface Treatments On Porcelain Wettability
Asiye Nehir ÖZDEN*, Funda AKALTAN** Purpose: Surface treatments may enhance the wettability of ceramic surfaces and/or create microporosities that facilitate mechanical interlocking with low viscosity resins. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects of selected porcelain surface treatments upon the surface wettability of ceramic surface.
Material and Method: Forty feldspathic porcelain disc samples of 10 mm diameter and 3 mm thickness were made by using a brass index. Samples were randomly divided into 7 treatment groups and one control group. Test samples in 7 treatment groups received the following treatments: 1. Silane coupling agent applied, 2. Etching with 36% (w/w) hydrofluoric acid gel for 10 minutes, 3. Roughening with the use of a coarse diamond bur, 4. Silane coupling agent applied after roughening and etching, 5. Silane coupling agent applied after roughening, 6. Silane coupling agent applied after etching, 7. Etching after roughening. The contact angles of the porcelain surfaces were measured by using the “entrapped air-bubble technique”.
Results: The groups of porcelain surface treatments for contact angle test were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis one-way Anova and no statistically significant difference was observed among these groups (p>0.05).
Conclusion: The wettability of porcelain might be more effected by other factors than surface treatment of porcelain. Keywords: Dental porcelain, WettabilityTurkiye Klinikleri J Dental Sci 1997, 3:109-111
