aDiş Hastalıkları ve Tedavisi ABD, Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi, SAMSUN Avian influenza virus (H5N1) is a rapidly spreading, highly pathogenic virus that has decimated the domestic poultry population. In a critical turn of events, this disease has crossed the immunological species barrier to humans and other mammals, and now poses the threat of becoming pandemic. Bird flu can lead to death in high risk individuals, especially the elderly and medically compromised individuals. Avian flu can easily be passed through contact with infected dental instruments or via a splash of blood or saliva. At the same time, however, this influenza can be transmitted by airborne pathogens; therefore, the entire dental treatment procedures will play an important role in spreading the disease. The purpose of this review is to broadly describe avian influenza, which is rapidly becoming a worldwide concern, and to discuss its significance relative to current dental treatment procedures. In view of these transmission hazards, dental personnel treating infected individuals should carefully observe the rules for standard infection control. However, clinicians can utilize proven and inexpensive strategies for mitigating environmental hazards such as employing aerosol reduction devices, using air cleaning equipment, consistently applying rubber dams, wearing masks and protective glasses during treatment, and rinsing patient's mouth with effective antiseptic solutions before treatment begins. Additionally, the operating room door should routinely be closed to prevent the transfer of atomized pathogens to other rooms within the clinic. Keywords: Occupation dentistry; community dentistry; dental care for aged; bird fluTurkiye Klinikleri J Dental Sci 2007, 13:103-106
