Taurodontism is a dental anomaly characterized by the enlargement of the pulp chamber, which may reach the proximity of the rooth apex. The etiology of taurodontism is unclear. It is thought to be caused by the failure of Hertwing’s epithelial sheath diaphragm to invaginate at the proper horizontal level, resulting in a tooth with short roots, elongated body, an enlarged pulp, and normal dentin. Previously, taurodontism was assumed that is related to syndromes such as Down’s and Klinefelter’s. Today, it is considered as an anotomic variance that could occur in a normal population. Most reports from literature revealed that taurodontism affected permanent teeth more frequently than primary teeth.
In this study, coincidentally noticed taurodont cases in 3 female and 2 male patients who recourse to with different complaints were presented.
The clinical appearences of taurodont teeth do not help to attain a definitive diagnosis. A definitive diagnosis in taurodont teeth is achieved by radiographs. Keywords: Tooth; tooth root; abnormalitiesTurkiye Klinikleri J Dental Sci 2007, 13:121-125
