The aim of this study is to determine the incidence of systemic diseases according to age and gender distribution of patients who applied to the endodontic clinic. Material and Methods: This study was conducted with 1017 patients between the ages of 12 and 76 who applied to the endodontic clinic from 2005 to 2007. Systemic statuses were obtained from medical history forms filled in by patients who consented to participate in the study, and the percentages of age and sex were determined according to the distribution of the systemic diseases. Results: The majority of patients (80.6 %) had no any systemic disease. Of those with at least one systemic disease, 41.1 % were male and 58.9% were female. The most common systemic diseases were cardio-vascular diseases (male: 39.8%, female: 42.25%). The other diseases frequently encountered were diabetes mellitus (16.24 %) and hepatitis (10.66%). 72.5% of diabetic patients had Type-II diabetes. Among hepatitis patients, 91 % were Hepatitis-B carriers. The results of the study show the incidence of systemic disease is directly proportional with age. The incidence of systemic disease was highest among those patients over age 60, among whom 87.5 % suffered from cardiovascular diseases. However, diabetes was seen in 37.5% in this age group. Additionally, hepatitis was mostly commonly encountered in the 11-29 age group (18.52%). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that 19.4% of patients have at least one systemic disease. Thus, the medical history of the patients must be carefully considered before treatment, and necessary precautions must be taken. Furthermore, it has been suggested that the risk of any complications can be reduced when clinician get more knowledge about these commonly seen diseases according to distribution of the age and gender. Keywords: Dental clinics; endodontics; medical informaticsTurkiye Klinikleri J Dental Sci 2008, 14:1-5
